Absolute Motion Control were engaged by Production Manager Lloyd Thomas to deliver the stage-level automation control package for the world premiere of The Hunger Games on stage, presented in a purpose-built new venue at Canary Wharf. This highly ambitious production demanded an equally bold engineering solution. At its core was a 6.9 m-wide basement lift with a 4.5-tonne capacity, paired with two high-speed Drop & Slide axes operating at up to 0.9 m/s to seamlessly close the show floor void. Surrounding the main lift, four personnel lifts enabled cast and scenic elements to emerge dynamically from the basement to stage level. Completing the stage engineering were four independently controlled, friction-driven seating banks, each capable of traversing 120 audience members, transforming the auditorium between in-the-round and promenade configurations. The entire automation control system was custom designed, built, and fully tested in-house, before being delivered and installed on site by our team. A technically demanding and truly unique production, and an exciting project to be part of.
